THIS IS NOT A THEATER COMPANY
This Is Not A Theatre Company’s productions are smelled, touched, and tasted as well as seen and heard; we ask partakers to surround themselves with the event, to engage the sensorium, to relish every aspect of what they perceive. We create site-based, immersive, multi-sensory participatory dance-theatre that is not passively consumed by audiences, but co-created. We do this because it asks the audience to perceive the world in new ways, to empathize in new ways, and to practice creativity – not to sit and watch the results of someone else’s creativity, but to create something themselves.
Our inaugural production, the "inventive new work" Pool Play (Waterside Plaza, 2014) was set entirely in a swimming pool and left audiences "joyous and refreshed - and maybe a little wet" (Show Business Weekly, 2/12/14). Our critically acclaimed production A Serious Banquet (Judson Church/New York Theatre Workshop, 2014), which invited audience members to feast at a cubist dinner party based on the party Pablo Picasso threw for Henri Rousseau in 1908, was heralded as a "profound immersive theatrical experience where performance and life intertwine effortlessly" (Show Business Weekly, 6/11/14) and an "invitation to experience celebration" (NYTheater Now, 6/10/14). Readymade Cabaret (2015), a Dada-inspired cabaret where the audience rolled the dice to determine the scenes that were performed, as well as the order in which they were performed, was lauded as "smart, functional and at times deeply poetic" (Culturebot, 5/8/15). Ferry Play (2015), a pod play set on the Staten Island Ferry, was featured in the 2015 New York International Fringe Festival, was called a "spirited, meditative performance" by The New York Times (8/25/15). The "delightful and provocative" Versailles 2015 (2015) performed a sold-out run in October-November 2015, and was remounted as Versailles 2016 by En Garde Arts in February 2016, with several more sold out performances in March 2016. Recently, we have produced Cafe Play, a site-specific play performed a historic cafe in the East Village, performed in Festival de la Vie, and created a series of pod-plays called Subway Plays (now available for download). In 2019, we will produce PLAY! (beginning in September), Theatre in the Dark (beginning in September), and an Untitled Play about Etiquette (beginning in October). Our work has also been featured in the Avignon Theatre Festival and the International Theatre Festival of Kerala.
